What is the value of counseling in consolidation?

The purpose of counseling is to achieve a change in the behavior, emotions, and character by a change in values and attitudes with a biblical ground.

Counseling is very important for the care and attention required for the disciples and new believers. Through it, the leader will know them deeper and is going to be able to bring them help and support in all the different areas of their life. All of this with the purpose of the new believer to be planted firmly and for him to establish God’s kingdom through his word.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A COUNSELOR

1. Instruct with his tongue.

The labor of a counselor is extremely important for those who wish to carry on with the consolidation of disciples because it is the tool that God has given us to supply the specific needs of each new believer. One must understand that the words that come from our mouth must be inspired by the Holy Spirit and that each advice that comes from our lips must have biblical fundament.

“The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue,
to know the word that sustains the weary.
He wakens me morning by morning,
wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.”

(Isaiah 50:4 NIV)

2. Help the righteous who fell.

Counseling is a great privilege that God has given to leaders and pastors because through it we show Jesus’ love and the father’s heart. A heart full of love and mercy that is always willing to bless and restore, even with those that fall.
In Luke 15 we see the heart of a God eager to look for that lost sheep, the lost coin, the unwise son. Counseling is a space destined to correct what's deficient in each disciple, so it becomes essential that we prepare ourselves in the most diligent way for this task.

Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules.”

(2 Timothy 2:15 NIV)

3. Share their experiences:

Nothing ministers more a person in counseling time than the fact that the counselor shares his previous experiences in which he shows not only his mistakes and weaknesses but also his victories. Showing ourselves vulnerable in front of the people we are counseling allows us to identify with their needs, and therefore it will be much easier to give them advice from God’s word.

“Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

(2 Corinthians 1:4 NIV)

4. Be tender as a nursemaid:

The opportunity that is given to us when counseling the new believers is invaluable because they are entrusting us their hearts, the secrets from their past, their wounds and weaknesses so that we with the tenderness of a nursemaid guide them and show them the accurate advice of God’s word, so that it brings light, direction, healing and blessings to their lives.

“Instead, we were like young children among you. Just as a nursing mother cares for her children.”

(1 Thessalonians 2:7 NIV)

5. Restore the one that has fallen away:

A genuine counselor knows how to bring back from their wrong ways those who don’t know God’s wisdom, it’s one of their main tasks. God has given us the privilege of knowing His word and see its effect in our lives, because of this, we can give advice and show through the word the eternal basics that can bring direction to the significant decisions in someone's life.
As counselors we don’t command the new believer, we only show God’s opinion expressed in his word, and it’s them who makes the choices as Jesus did, he gave freedom to people to choose.

"My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.”

(James 5:19-20 NIV)
